Alberta

Alberta is Canada's wild west. It's the home of the famous, cowboy-clad Calgary Stampede, but what really makes this province wild are the sky-high mountains that rise seemingly straight out of the high plains. Trout fishermen find nirvana here, and hunters flock to some of the best big game hunting in North America. But no matter what kind of trip you're planning, the spectacular scenery mesmerizes all who come here to fish, hunt, or explore the region that ranges from the stark badlands to the turquoise waters near the continental divide.

Alberta has five national parks: Banff National Park, in the Rocky Mountains; Jasper National Park; Waterton Lakes National Park, in the southwestern corner of Alberta; Elk Island National Park, east of Edmonton; and Wood Buffalo National Park, straddling the Alberta-Northwest Territories boundary. Alberta also has an extensive system of provincial parks. The province's most famous annual event is the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, a rodeo held every July in Calgary.
