How to Catch AND Land that Trophy Pike

We’ve all heard about the one that got away. Why is it always a trophy? For starters, trophy fish put your terminal tackle to the test.
Canada is the land of trophy pike, but you’ve got to land them. Here are our TOP SIX TIPS for trophy pike:
Rod & reel – Buy the best you can afford. A $200 reel is worth every penny. Look for a medium/heavy graphite bait-casting package. Don’t use a bass reel. Big pike and big pike lures will tear them up.
Line – Always, always, always travel to Canada with fresh line on your reels. Use at least 20-lb test – even consider using some of the braided muskie lines.
Leaders – This is one of the most overlooked tackle items. Use only cross lock leaders that are 30-lb test and a minimum of 18 inches long. Big pike love to roll up your leader.
Drag – Know your drag. Most fishermen set their drag too tight. The lighter it is set, the more quickly your reel can react to powerful movements of a trophy pike.
Hook setting – With the proper gear, you can use your entire body to set the hook. Learn to thumb the spool while setting the hook. This will keep the drag from slipping and preventing a good hook set.
Lures – Big lures do catch big pike. Learn to use muskie fishing tactics for pursuing trophy pike. And, keep those hooks sharp. Purchase a hook sharpener if you don’t have one…and use it!
